The exhibition Going Staying comprises 80 installations, objects, videos, photos and drawings by 36 international artists from the 1960s to the present that tell of movement and of places where movement comes to a halt. They show walking-along and standing-still as direct, free or compelled practices that are tied in with the body and therefore convey the experience of identity, as rudimentary as these may appear.

They examine fundamental possibilities of self-perception and self-reassurance, the relationship to space, place and time, but also formulate historical, social and biographical experience. They design a model for other ways to live and view walking-along just as much a metaphor for the transitory and fleeting as for the passing of human existence. Thus the exhibition spans the confusing simultaneity of the sensation that brings together going and living, standstill and paralysis, yet on the other hand recognizes movement as nomadic, restless wandering while remaining stationary is seen as an arrival at one's home base.

Contemporary art has found many different possibilities to express the experiences between going and staying, beginning and ending, the road and the destination. These comprise the basic thematization of walking: in the studio, in the city, in the countryside, and up to our utmost physical capacity. They formulate images of social deformation and political violence, but also the utopian visions of change. They show life-endowed objects and rooms, doors, beds, mobile living quarters, signs of arrival, of expectation and of passage, which tell of the fluctuating sense of going and of staying.

The exhibition will include works by Marina Abramoviç/Ulay, Absalon, Pilar Albarracín, Helena Almeida, Darren Almond, Ulf Aminde, Janine Antoni, Samuel Beckett, Joseph Beuys, David Claerbout, Willie Doherty, Olafur Eliasson, Hamish Fulton, Regina José Galindo, Mona Hatoum, William Kentridge, Kimsooja, Kristof Kintera, Sigalit Landau, Richard Long, Kris Martin, Bruce Nauman, Astrid Nippoldt, Julia Oschatz, Tony Oursler, Paul Ramírez Jonas, Pipilotti Rist, Michal Rovner, Seifollah Samadian, Nancy Spero, Bill Viola, Katefiina Vincourová, Franz Erhard Walther, Rachel Whiteread, Andrea Zittel.
