Salgado presents thirty years of photographic work on the African continent in PHotoEspaña. África testifies to the reality of this land in fifty large-format images about work, war and migrations.

In África, Sebastião Salgado, considered one of the masters of social documentary photography, presents a collection of images that summarises 30 years of his work on the Dark Continent. The exhibition contains over 50 large-format black-and-white photographs and is divided into three parts: Southern Africa, Great Lakes and Northern Africa. It portrays issues such as the tea harvest in Rwanda, the nomads on the Sahara dessert, war's consequences on population and the migrations to Europe, thus composing a global vision of African reality.

Salgado's photographs have revolved around three axes: Work, Migrations and Nature. Unlike other artists, he does not deal in isolated images, but rather explores his subjects in depth, developing large series over periods of up to ten years. Another sign of identity in his work is that he does not photograph violence or war, but instead the human being's efforts to achieve a decent life.

Sebastião Salgado (Aimorés, Brazil, 1945), winner of the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1998, began his photographic career in 1973 after leaving the International Coffee Organisation. He has been a member of Magnum Photos and is the founder of Amazonas Images. His work has been shown in the world's major art centres as well as in spaces such as the United Nations headquarters, and it has been collected in books like Other Americas, Workers and Migrations.
